Hurtigruten has suspended its cruise programme to west Africa a for the upcoming winter season due to concerns for the safety of passengers and crew.

The cruises, introduced earlier this winter, included Dakar in Senegal and Banjul in The Gambia, Bissagos Islands off the coast of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.

However, the cruise line said: “Due to increasing levels of instability in the region, HX has elected to pause its operations for the upcoming season to ensure the safety of our guests and crew.”

The cancelled cruises were due to operate in October and November this year.

Huritgruten said it would protect agent commissions for booked customers who could not find an alternative cruise.

Meanwhile, MS Maud will shift from the HX (expedition fleet) back to the Hurtigruten fleet to operate Norwegian Coastal Express sailings, as part of a state contract, from 1 November.

The group said MS Maud, which previously operated cruises along the Norwegian coast until three years ago, will return to its expedition fleet in 2026.
