One of Iceland’s major tourist attractions, the iconic Blue Lagoon was evacuated again yesterday after a volcano in the southwest of the island began spewing lava.

It is the eighth eruption in the Sundhnúksgígar area on the Reykjanes peninsula since December last year, with the repeated activity forcing residents to abandon the nearby town of Grindavik.

The latest eruption yesterday evening was caused by a series of earthquakes, say experts.

The Blue Lagoon said it will remain closed on Friday, 23 August, while the situation is assessed.

Residents in the capital, Reykjavik, posted on social media to say they could see plumes of lava rising from the volcano, which is about 50kms from the city.

However, flights in and out of Reykjavic Airport have been unaffected.

The last eruption, in June this year, lasted more than three weeks.
