There are now more international routes from Europe than before the pandemic, except to Africa, according to airline body IATA.

It said that European carriers increased capacity 10% year on year in April, and saw demand rise 10.1%.

Worldwide, demand for flights was up 16% compared to April 2023 while capacity was up 15%, said IATA, and load factors (percentage of seats filled) were up by a 0.7 percentage point to 82.2%.

“Passenger demand has been growing for 36 consecutive months. As we enter the peak northern summer travel season, there is every reason to feel optimistic for a strong summer with airlines offering a wide range of travel options,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
