Intrepid has launched an emergency appeal to support communities impacted by severe flooding in eastern and southern Spain, which has claimed at least 158 lives.

So far, 155 people have died in the worst hit region of Valencia, two people died in Castile-La Mancha, and there’s been one death in Andalusia. A number of people are still missing.

Emergency teams are struggling to restore basic services in Valencia, according to local news reports, including water and food supplies.

Intrepid said all of its tours are continuing to operate as scheduled, but it is ‘closely monitoring updates and guidance from local authorities to ensure travellers safety’.

It pointed out that, at present, there are no travel restrictions locally or internationally due to the floods, which were caused by sudden heavy rainfall, which started on since 29 October. The floods have led to power outages, road closures and property damage.

The operator said the risk to travellers ‘remains low’, but Biheng Zhang, General Manager of its not-for-profit charitable Intrepid Foundation said: “When a disaster affects one of our local communities, it impacts all of us.

““Through The Intrepid Foundation, the entire Intrepid ecosystem of travellers and industry can lend support to those who need it the most.”

All funds raised through the appeal will be matched by the Intrepid Foundation and will go directly to Intrepid NGO partner and grassroots organisation Casa Caridad, to provide immediate relief such as food and clothing to those impacted.

Intrepid has a local office in Spain, where it employs 25 people, including General Manager Western Europe Florencia Allo Moreno, who is based in Valenica and has been personally affected by the floods.

“The current situation in Spain is devastating and communities are suffering deeply, with many people losing their homes and searching for their loved ones. Spain is a beloved destination for many Intrepid travellers and we want to do everything we can to support the relief efforts,” she said.

As well as providing immediate relief, Casa Caridad is working with the Valencian government and will direct funds to the areas that need it most, as the situation evolves.
