French police are leading an investigation into the death of a woman in her 20s who went overboard from MSC Virtuosa as it was sailing to Southampton.

The ship issued a distress call at around 2am on Saturday as it was north of Les Casuets, close to Aldeney in the Channel Islands, and a French navy helicopter, an RNLI lifeboat and a Channel Islands air search plane were scrabbled to help with the rescue effort.

A French coastguard spokesman said its helicopter located the woman and hoisted her from the water, but a medical team later pronounced her dead.

MSC Cruises said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

“Out of respect for their privacy, we will not be providing further details.”

Police from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary are assisting French police with enquiries into the incident, which happened as Virtuosa was sailing to Southampton from Cartagena in Spain.
