Speculation is mounting on social media that Monarch Airlines is about to relaunch six years after its collapse.

Twitter and Instagram accounts have been set up with the @letsmonarch handle, with text stating that a new brand is being created.

A new website, letsmonarch.co.uk, has also gone live with a holding page stating Monarch is to relaunch.

Daniel Ellingham, a former advisor to the Boards of both Swissair and Austrian Airlines, was registered by Companies House as a person ‘significant control’ of Monarch Airlines by Companies House on Friday 18 August.

Aviation website Airways quoted him saying the Monarch name had been transferred to new owners, with him as Chairman of the new Board.

He said he was leading ‘the iconic Monarch brand into a new era’.

Mr Ellingham said he had secured investment from the UK and the EU to relaunch the airline, which failed in October 2017, as a premium alternative to low-cost carriers.

Airways said the company intended to make an initial approach to the Civil Aviation Authority within the next four weeks, with a view to ultimately acquiring a new air operator’s licence.

It is also planning to launch an online travel agent, Monarch Holidays.

While he declined to say from where the airline will fly, Mr Ellingham has hinted it will operate from the same airports as the previous Monarch Airlines, which was headquartered at London Luton and had bases at Birmingham, Leeds-Bradford, London Gatwick and Manchester airports.

There was mixed reaction to the news on social media, with some users saying they were ‘delighted’ and it was ‘a dream come true’ while others were sceptical it will make a success, likening Monarch’s possible return to the relaunch of Flybe.
