The UK Foreign Office has warned British travellers in Istanbul to remain vigilant after an attack by two people believed to be linked with Islamic State left one person dead.

The attack happened at around 8.40am UK time on Sunday 28 January at the Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church in Istanbul’s Sariyer district.

The victim was a Turkish citizen. Two gunmen, who are understood to be linked to the Islamic State terror group, have been arrested, Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

The FCDO has updated its advice to say: “On the morning of 28 January 2024, an incident occurred at the Santa Maria Church in the district of Sariyer in Istanbul. We advise all British Nationals in the area to follow the advice of the Turkish authorities.
