Jet2 has banned a 55-year-old male passenger for life after his ‘disgraceful behaviour’ that forced a flight to Tenerife to divert to Faro.
The airline alleges the man peed in the aircraft cabin, intimidated children and other passengers, illicitly consumed alcohol and was in possession of illegal substances on the flight from Glasgow.
Following the incident, the plane was forced to divert to Faro, Portugal, where police offloaded the man.
The Jet2 spokesperson said the aircraft was cleaned at Faro before it resumed its flight to Tenerife the next day.
Passengers on the return leg to Glasgow from Tenerife were forced to spend another night in the destination due to the plane’s late arrival. The passengers were eventually flown back to Scotland on Friday (14 April).
Affected customers and crew in Faro and Tenerife were given overnight accommodation and refreshments, the airline said.
Jet2 confirmed it will ‘vigorously pursue’ the man for the costs of the hotel accommodation, airport charges, fuel and cleaning.
The company claims costs would likely be ‘five figures’.
Jet2 Managing Director Phil Ward called the passenger’s behaviour ‘absolutely disgraceful’.
“We would like to apologise to all of our customers on board and colleagues who have been impacted or affected,” he added.
“As a family-friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour and we would like to thank the Portuguese authorities for their assistance.
“We will now vigorously pursue [the man] for all the costs that we incurred as a result of this diversion, as well as banning him for life.
“We have a very busy summer coming ahead and the safety and wellbeing of everyone on our flights is paramount.”
