Jet2 has banned a passenger for life after he was dragged off a flight by Bulgarian police for being aggressive towards the cabin crew.
The man is alleged to have illicitly consumed alcohol before becoming abusive on the LS151 flight from Glasgow to Dalaman, Turkey, on Tuesday (2 May).
Jet2 said the crew had ‘no choice’ but to divert the plane to Sofia Airport so that police could offload the 29-year-old because of his ‘disgraceful’ behaviour.
The airline added it would ‘vigorously pursue’ the man for recovery of all costs incurred by the diversion.
A passenger, who witnessed the scenes, told GlasgowLive: “A passenger was out of their head, he was drunk and being abusive towards the cabin crew. He started causing danger.
“There was a load of commotion, and the crew were visibly shaken up. The diversion caused a rapid descent into Sofia Airport. It was scary.
“The Jet2 staff conducted themselves very well.”
Jet2 Managing Director Phil Ward said: “[The passenger] behaved in a disgraceful fashion, causing unnecessary distress to others on board.
“As a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to this behaviour, and we would like to apologise to other customers and our colleagues for any upset caused.
“Our highly trained crew, along with a number of other customers, acted to restrain [the passenger] and we would like to sincerely thank them for their actions; however this simply should not be happening.”
He added: “[The passenger] has been banned from flying with Jet2 for life and we will vigorously pursue him for all the costs that we incurred as a result of this diversion.
“There are serious consequences to disruptive passenger behaviour and we will not hesitate to take action to stamp it out.”
Last month, Jet2 banned another passenger for life after he allegedly peed in the aircraft cabin and intimidated children and other passengers. The plane was forced to divert to Faro, Portugal, from its route to Canary island Tenerife.
