Jet2 has banned a disruptive passenger for life after their ‘deplorable and violent’ behaviour caused a flight from Glasgow to Tenerife to be diverted on Wednesday 12 June.

The airline said it will also pursue the passenger, who is now in police custody, for the five-figure cost of the diversion.

The airline alleged that the passenger started to show ‘disruptive and aggressive’ behaviour shortly after takeoff, before physically attacking crew and other passengers.

The flight was diverted to Shannon in Ireland, where the passsenger was arrested by the police and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in County Clare.

Jet2 said crew have provided statements and it is ready to assist authorities with their investigations.

It also said it will ‘vigorously’ pursue the passenger for all costs incurred in the diversion, adding that it will be a ‘five-figure sum’.

A standby aircraft and crew were immediately flown to Shannon to take remaining customers to Tenerife.

Jet2 Managing Director Phil Ward said: “This is one of the worst cases of disruptive passenger behaviour that we have ever witnessed, and we would like to apologise to all colleagues and customers onboard for what they had to experience.

“This event should act as a stark warning to anyone who thinks that it might be acceptable to behave in such an unacceptable manner onboard one of our flights.”
