The Foreign Office is warning that travellers visiting Kenya will still need to apply for a visa, despite plans to scrap the requirement this year.

In December, Kenya’s President William Ruto announced the country was planning to go visa-free early in 2024 and implement a new electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system for visitors.

The FCDO has updated its advice to say that that UK travellers should continue to apply for a visa until further notice is given on the new system.

The updated FCDO advice says: “On 12 December 2023 the President of Kenya announced that Kenya will be visa-free from January 2024.

“The Kenyan government is currently in the process of developing an electronic travel authorisation system which will replace visas for visitors to Kenya. However, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed on 2 January 2024 that visitors should continue to apply for visas until further notice.”
