Princess Cruises has confirmed that it will never be able to open some of its main outdoor, family-friendly attractions that were key features on its newest ship, Sun Princess.

The RollGlider, CoastalClimb and Ropes Course, which were to be highlights of its new Park19 activities area, will remain permanently closed.

The three attractions on the top deck have been inaccessible to guests since Sun Princess launched in February, with the cruise line telling passengers this was due to the need for ‘additional safety checks’.

In a statement issued last week, Princess said: “We regret to announce that Princess is unable to accept delivery of the RollGlider, Coastal Climb, and Ropes Course features within Park19 aboard Sun Princess and those experiences will not be opening.”

It is interesting wording since the facilities are already installed on Sun Princess, but guests have been unable to use them.

The RollGlider was to have been a first of its kind glider-style zipline experience, while the Coastal Climb included an open-air 360-degree observation deck.

Princess Cruises has not explained why the facilities will never open, but it said: “We are actively evaluating these areas for future recreational opportunities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests.”

It pointed out that Park19 includes other ‘fun and safe’ recreational options including a splash zone with water jets, a jogging track, hammock area, multifunctional sports court and Infinite Horizon, which has leaning tilt walls that cantilever over the side of the ship.

Sun Princess is the first in the line’s Sphere class and will be followed by Star Princess, which is due to debut in October 2025.

Princess has not said if these facilities will be included on the new ship.
