A new badge to recognise hotels that are sustainably-certified will be introduced by Kuoni as it steps up its efforts to feature more eco-conscious properties.
The Engage – People and Planet logo will be used from early next year as an over-arching label for all properties accredited by The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), seen as the global standard for sustainability.
Around 25% of Kuoni’s property portfolio is currently accredited under the GSTC, but the company hopes to raise this to 35% by the end of April 2024.
Claire Ross, Sustainability Director for Kuoni’s parent DER Touristik UK, said: “There are quite a lot of certification schemes in different regions of the world which hotels can sign up for and they all vary in terms of scope and what they to do.
“When you are a worldwide tour operator, it means there are lots of different labels which can be confusing for travel agents and customers.
“We’ve decided to make it easier to identify hotels which meet the strict criteria of the GSTC, which covers sustainable management, environmental protection, supporting local communities and promoting cultural heritage.”
The Engage – People and Planet badge will appear online and in Kuoni’s brochures from January 2024.
Claire added: “By staying in an Engage hotel, you can be reassured that your stay is supporting positive action for our planet and worldwide communities.
“Our goal is to make it easier for everyone to make sustainable holiday choices. We really believe this move adds value to the customers’ experience with us so we’re also bringing to life the positive impacts those sustainability initiatives have on the holiday experience on our hotel pages.”
