Liverpool’s cruise port is to be taken over by Global Ports Holding, which aims to turn it into a gateway for northern European cruises.

The company, which has signed a 50-year deal to operate services at Liverpool Cruise Port, plans to inject £25 million into the facility.

The investment will include a floating pontoon to allow two medium-sized cruise ships to dock at the same time, bringing in up to 7,000 passengers a day.

Liverpool is the first UK port for Global Ports Holding, the world’s largest cruise port operator.

It plans to build a new terminal building, which will provide waterfront retails and hospitality for cruise passengers as well as local tourists and residents.

Last year, Liverpool saw the arrival of 102 cruise ships and more than 186,000 passengers; this is expected to increase to more than 200,000 this year and top 300,000 once the new infrastructure is added.
