Louisville Tourism and the Kentucky Derby Museum kicked off a year of celebration last weekend when they attended the Epsom Derby with the Kentucky Derby trophy.

The arrival of the trophy at the famous horse race in Surrey marked the start of celebrations that will lead up to the 150th Kentucky Derby race next year.

It was the first time the trophy had left the US.

Racegoers, including TV presenters Clare Balding (pictured, left), Sue Barker and chef Michel Roux Jr, at Epsom were able to catch a glimpse of the Kentucky Derby trophy on Saturday (3 June).

The Epsom Derby is said to have inspired Kentucky’s own iconic race, which was first run at Churchill Downs in the US in 1875.

Louisville Tourism’s Director of Tourism Development Jessica Morgan and Kentucky Derby Museum’s Director of Communications Katrina Helmer attended the race to highlight the ties between British and American horse racing.

Kentucky Derby Museum President Patrick Armstrong said: “We’re excited to travel back to our Derby roots and share how the greatest two minutes in sports is an integral part in Louisville’s story and Kentucky’s success.

“We believe a trip to Kentucky Derby 150 will be a bucket-list item for British horseracing fans, and we’re excited for the museum to be part of Louisville’s continued growth in international tourism.”

British Airways’ new direct service from Heathrow to Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport, launched on Monday (5 June).

The service will operate five times a week in the summer before reducing to four times in the winter.
