Lufthansa has warned a late-notice 35-hour strike by ground staff will affect up to 90% of its flights tomorrow (Tuesday 20 February).

About 25,000 members of the Verdi union will walk out from 8pm local time tonight, until just after 7am on Wednesday 21 February.

The strikes could affect up to 200,000 passengers, with Frankfurt and Munich the worst hit. Industrial action is also expected at Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Stuttgart

Lufthansa warned: “Due to the 35-hour warning strike from February 19 at 20:00 CET until February 21 at 7:10 CET, we currently assume that around 10 to 20 percent of the flight program will be possible on Tuesday, February 20.

“Passengers who are affected by flight cancellations as a result of the Verdi strike will be informed by email or via the Lufthansa app. We regret the inconvenience this strike might cause you.”

Passengers can rebook cancelled flights for free on the Lufthansa website, on the Lufthansa app or service centres. Domestic German flights can be converted into a rail voucher.

The Independent says most flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich, including all links serving UK airports, are grounded on Tuesday and the first flight from Frankfurt to London on Wednesday is also cancelled.

Lufthansa added: “Please only travel to the airport on the days affected by the strike if your flight has not been cancelled. Due to the strike, the rebooking desks are unfortunately not staffed.”

Earlier this month, industrial action affected 100,000 Lufthansa passengers, while there was also disruption at German airports in January.
