We were pleased to host senior industry figures, government officials and the media at ABTA’s annual Travel Matters event earlier this week.
To coincide with the event, we released ABTA’s new findings on how travel matters to the UK, revealing that outbound travel contributes £51.6bn in GVA annually, and supports 818,000 jobs. This research underpins the engagement we have with Government and politicians, demonstrating the huge value of our industry to the UK economy.
We were pleased to welcome Mike Kane MP to the stage once again, attending this time in Government as Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security. It was encouraging to hear him talk passionately about the importance of travel to both his constituents and people across the UK, and about vital work the industry is doing with Government on accessible travel, which ABTA is involved with.
The Minister also talked about climate change, and this was a topic that featured heavily throughout the event, with speakers highlighting the urgency to decarbonise, and the support need to make this happen. Hazel McGuire from Intrepid also made the point that protecting nature is an important part of tackling climate change.
Other topics raised at the conference include skills and the UK’s relationship with the EU. These are among the issues, along with decarbonisation and wider sustainability, that ABTA is raising with Government to get the right framework in place to support members in running your businesses, while also making the case that travel is a driver of growth.
You can read my speech addressing conference here, and find out more about our new research figures here. The full research will be released in early 2025.
