Manchester Airport has said operations are now back to normal following yesterday’s extensive cancellations and delays and it is not anticipating further disruption.
Sixty-six outbound flights, a quarter of all departures, and 50 inbound flights, 18% of all arrivals, were cancelled on Sunday, according to aviation analytics company Cirium, as a result of a local power failure that started in the early hours.
Cirium said easyJet had the largest number of cancellations of any airline.
Despite the power being reinstated a few hours later, all flights were cancelled from Terminals 1 and 2 on Sunday afternoon. Many customers who were able to fly were not able to take their luggage with them.
The airport’s CEO Chris Woodroofe apologised for the power cut chaos, which caused problems with security and baggage screening.
At 9pm on Sunday, Manchester Airport said Monday’s schedule was expected to run as usual with no further disruption.
It said: “Airlines will be in touch with passengers to rearrange cancelled flights as we work with airlines, their baggage handling agents and other partners to make sure passengers whose bags did not make it onto their flights are reunited with their belongings as soon as possible.
“We thank passengers for their patience today and we would also like to thank all of our staff, airlines and onsite partners for their hard work and resilience.”
Manchester Airport said the airport is ‘slightly busier than usual due to yesterday’s cancellations and a small number of residual delays but everything is running as it should be’.
Jet2 said: “We want to reassure all customers travelling on Monday 24th June 2024, that all Jet2.com flights will operate to/from Manchester as planned.
“Please proceed to the Airport as normal, check-in will open in line with scheduled departure time and close 40 minutes prior to departure.
“If you are currently in resort and have a Jet2Holidays transfer booked, this also remains unchanged.”
Jet2 told passengers who are waiting to be reunited with their luggage: “Our UK-based Ground Operations Team will work hard to ensure that we get your baggage to you, as soon as we can, as you can appreciate this may take some time and we will endeavour to be in contact with you by the end of the day on Monday 24th June 2024.”
EasyJet and TUI have said customers flying from Manchester today should check their flight status.
The Manchester Evening News reports there are no cancelled flights from Manchester Airport today, though there are delays of up to two hours on some flights.
Some holidaymakers reported two-hour queues at bag drop early this morning, while others said they hadn’t experienced any problems.
