Marella Cruises has cancelled this week’s planned sailing on board its ship Discovery 2, because of a refit delay.
The ship is in dry dock in Cadiz, undergoing a full refurbishment of balcony cabins and suites, as well as a hull repaint and propeller polish and had been due to resume sailing on 7 November.
However, the maintenance period has been extended and TUI said the delay is due to extreme weather conditions in southern Spain.
Marella Discovery 2‘s 7 November cruise had been due to leave Malaga, calling at Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Valencia, Cartegena and Gibraltar on a ‘Spanish Flavours’ itinerary.
In a web chat seen by Travel Gossip, a TUI agent told a passenger: “You may already be aware that Marella Discovery 2 is currently undergoing some maintenance in Cadiz. Unfortunately, due to the extreme weather conditions in southern Spain which you’ll have seen in the news, we’ve had to pause some of the necessary work and extend our maintenance period.
“Sadly, this means that we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel your cruise. While the situation is beyond out control, we appreciate how disappointing this news will be.”
Passengers say they have been offered a full refund and £100 compensation, or a refund and either £200 per person off a future cruise or £150pp off a TUI holiday if booked before 18 November.
Marella Cruises hasn’t said whether the next cruise, ‘Sights and Delights’, scheduled for 14 November, calling at Lisbon, Portugal, Cadiz, Casablanca, Cartagena and Motril, will go ahead.
On 28 November, Marella Discovery 2 is due to carry out a ‘Winter Escape’ repositioning cruise from Malaga to Tenerife and the ship will sail in the Canary Islands for winter 2024-25, before homeporting in Limassol, Cyprus, in spring 2025.
Marella Discovery 2 had been due to sail in Asia and the Middle East this winter, but cancelled the programme because of safety fears in the Red Sea region. The cruise line put its revised winter 2024-25 programme on sale in May.
