New Government to get tough on families who take cheaper term-time holidays

New Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has warned parents whose kids bunk off school to go on holiday will be punished.

In an interview with the BBC, she said the fines for unauthorised absence from school, introduced by the last Government, are ‘here to stay’. The fines will rise from £60 to £80 per child in August.

Currently, it is up to local authorities to decide whether to slap parents with a fine, but the law requires them to consider imposing the penalty when a child has missed five days or more of school.

If a parent receives a second fine for the same child within three years, they will be charged £160.

However, one in four families say they are considering taking their children of out school early – or have already done so – to take advantage of lower prices, according to a new survey.

Research agency Opinium also said that 51% of those surveyed said the cost of living crisis will impact their travel this year, with 22% foregoing a holiday altogether.

Opinium Senior Research Executive Matt Howlett said: “As so many make cutbacks to their holidays this year – and with cost being the main factor for those not going away – the travel industry may need to assess prices and deals to encourage more people to go away in future.”
