Norse Atlantic Airways will launch flights between London and South Africa’s Cape Town on 28 October 2024.

The flights will operate three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Fares start from £499 return in economy and £1,199 return in Norse Premium class.

The airline said it was ‘injecting much-needed competition’ into the market, going head to head with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

BA operates year-round to Cape Town while Virgin offers a winter-only service. Both airlines fly from London Heathrow, while Norse flights will operate from Gatwick.

“By breaking the duopoly on this route, we are not only expanding travel options for consumers but also driving down costs and putting the customer back in the pilot’s seat, said Norse CEO and Founder Bjorn Tore Larsen.

“At Norse Atlantic Airways, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the wonders of the world and our new route to Cape Town will allow many more people to visit this amazing destination.”

Outbound flights will depart Gatwick at 20:00 and land in Cape Town at 9:30 the following morning. Inbound flights depart Cape Town at 11:44 and arrive at London Gatwick at 21.35 the same day.

All flights will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Norse, which already flies from Gatwick to a number of US cities, announced last month that it will also launch a new three-times-week service to Las Vegas in September
