On the Beach has joined forces with former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington to call for a ban on children’s swimwear that can’t be seen under water.
The online travel agent is asking the Government to ban retailers from selling swimwear for children in colours such as blue, white or grey – which are not visible under the water, and should a child get into trouble they are hard to spot.
On the Beach said 66% of children wear blue, white or grey and when it ran tests at a depth of two metres these colours became almost invisible.
On the Beach has now launched a Change.Org petition, alongside Rebecca Adlington, asking the Government to urgently review legislation around selling the light coloured swimwear to children.
On the Beach Chief Customer Officer Zoe Harris said: “Either retailers aren’t aware of the dangers, or they simply can’t see past the fact that these colours are some of the most popular ones that keeps the cash rolling in. They need to do better by their customers and put safety before profits.”
On the Beach is also urging parents to check swimwear before going on holiday this summer and encouraging them to replace blue, white and grey swimwear with a brightly coloured option.
