On the Beach has opened a sign-up page for customers to register their interest in holidaying at the new ‘North Korean Benidorm’.

The resort in Wosan, at a former missile launch site, got its nickname after North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un reportedly sent a fact-finding mission to Spain’s Costa Blanca in 2017.

The resort is expected to open in May 2026 and is due to be one of the largest resorts in the world, with capacity for 100,000 tourists, according to one expert, mainly from North Korea, China and Russia

On the Beach says it is ‘testing the water’ to see if there is any interest among Brits, should package holidays to North Korean Benidorm go on sale.

Chief Customer Officer Zoe Harris said: “We’re always on the lookout for the next best thing when it comes to all-inclusive resorts in incredible destinations.

“We’re intrigued by the new Wosan resort to say the least, as I imagine the rest of the UK is. So, if you are one of those people that would like to visit, then we’ve set up a page where you can register your interest.

“Who knows what will happen in the future, I don’t envisage us Brits swapping Benidorm for North Korean Benidorm anytime soon, but we will be interested to see how many sign up.”

North Korea expert Jacob Bogle said: “The Wonsan resort is the largest recreational complex in North Korea and is one of the largest single-operator beach resorts in the world in terms of length.

“Initial plans released back in 2013 suggested that the resort could accommodate as many as 100,000 visitors at a time.

“North Korea does have a moderate domestic tourism industry, but Wonsan was billed as a place to draw in foreign tourists.”

Meanwhile, On the Beach Chief Supply Officer Bill Allen will leave the company next year. He joined On the Beach in 2014 and has previously worked at MyTravel and On Holiday Group.
