The leader of one of Spain’s top travel destinations has described the British as ‘high quality tourists’.

Palma Tourist Board Director General Pedro Homar told Travel Gossip that in terms of bed nights, the UK is Palma’s biggest market, followed by Germany.

“Britain is key to our strategy, not only because of tradition and the close links we have but also for the type of tourists from Britain that choose Palma,” said Pedro.

“Britain is a top market for us. We welcome the British and we want them to keep coming.”

He said Brits are ‘high-quality’ visitors who enjoy ‘top gastronomy, culture, museums and opera’.

This Sunday, Palma Tourist Board has invited a select group of UK travel agents to a gastronomic event in London, with cuisine provided by three of Majorca’s Michelin-starred chefs. It will also be hosting another event in the UK in November, as well as attending World Travel Market.

Speaking from Barrhead Travel’s conference in Palma, captital of Majorica this week, Pedro said: “The UK is key for us.” Addressing the audience of UK travel agents, he added: “I am not going to say we don’t have problems with some residents for tourism but the solution is to include them in everything we do. Tourists are welcome.”
