Palma’s Mayor is planning to further limit the number of cruise passengers arriving in the Majorcan port to reduce overtourism.

On 29 May, he unveiled a package of measures, including a further cap on the number of ships and potentially only allowing those that homeport in Palma.

Mayor Jaime Martinez has also suggested the city could introduce a double tax for cruise passengers, one on the ship’s arrival in port and another to enter the city.

Palma already limits cruise ship arrivals to no more than three a day, with only one ship allowed to carry more than 5,000 passengers. Those that homeport in Palma include Marella’s Discovery and Discovery 2, MSC Seaview and Costa Pacifica.

The Mayor’s proposals will have to be agreed by multiple political parties and organisations, but they were opposed in a council meeting on Thursday by Spain’s far-right party Vox and three others parties.
