Ambassador Cruise Line has apologised after stormy weather forced its ship Ambience to alter its itinerary last week.

The 1,400-passenger ship was on a 12-day British Isles Discovery roundtrip, which had departed Tilbury on 3 April and also featured calls at French ports.

While docked in Cherbourg on 12 April, the ship’s mooring lines came loose in the storm, causing the ship to move away from the pier and the gangway to fall into the sea.

No passengers were on the gangway at the time, the cruiseline said.

It was later announced the ship would remain in Cherbourg and a scheduled call at Honfleur would no longer take place.

The ship returned to Tilbury on 14 April and passengers on the cruise have been offered a 25% discount off a future sailing.

Ambassador issued a statement to say: “Ambassador can confirm that severe weather conditions affected its Easter British Isles sailing last week, which saw Ambience unable to travel on from Cherbourg to Honfleur, its penultimate port of call.

“Given the severe weather conditions, and that Honfleur is a tidal port which can only be accessed at high water, the high winds caused the ship to miss that high-water window. Therefore, Ambience made her way directly back to the UK for her scheduled arrival in Tilbury on Friday 14 April.”

The statement added: “No cruise line likes to cancel ports, but we hope our guests can understand that sometimes this is necessary in the interest of the safety of all onboard, which remains our number one priority.

“We fully appreciate that some of our guests were disappointed by these elements beyond our control, and we would love them to come back on another cruise with Ambassador around the British Isles, when hopefully the weather will be kinder to us.

“As a gesture of goodwill, Ambassador has offered all guests on the Easter British Isles sailing a 25% discount on the best published price on any British Isles cruise departing in the next 18 months.

“Those wishing to sail on a different itinerary have been offered a 10% discount on all other cruises, again departing in the next 18 months.

“The team at Ambassador would like to extend its gratitude to colleagues onboard and ashore for having dealt with the situation so professionally and efficiently and for ensuring that all guests remained safe and well throughout this unexpected turn of events.”

Ambassador said guests were advised of the offer while on board the ship. Bookings must be made by 30 June 2023.
