Paul Mundy Cruising founder Paul Mundy has died at the age of 88.

He set up Paul Mundy Ltd with wife Judith in 1970, as the first cruise-only agency in the UK. The company’s trading name was changed to Paul Mundy Cruising in the 1990s.

Paul then sold the business in 1999 to Edwina Lonsdale, who worked in the company since 1989, and it became Mundy Cruising.

Edwina, who is Managing Director of Mundy Cruising, said not only was Paul Mundy Ltd the UK’s first cruise-only agency, it was ‘as far as our extensive research can tell, the first in the world’.

Edwina said: “He believed passionately in the broad future of cruise holidays, something we take so much for granted today, but which back then were very much a narrow minority pursuit.

She added: “Paul knew the industry inside out, and his connections stretched across the world. All the great and the good of the cruise industry crossed our threshold in those early days to visit this highly respected guru, a pioneer of the modern-day cruise industry. For all the years since his retirement in 1999, Paul’s wise counsel has continued to be a valuable resource within our company.”

She described Paul as a ‘gentleman’ adding: “He is treasured for his mischievous sense of humour which always ensured that meetings ended with a smile (and often a glass of champagne; his fridge was always fully stocked).”

Paul is survived by his wife Judith. They were married for over 60 years. A celebration of his life will be held in due course.
