People urged to evacuate coastal cities as Typhoon Ampil approaches Tokyo

People have been evacuated from parts of Japan as Typhoon Ampil approaches the capital.

The storm has intensified to the equivalent strength of a category four hurricane, bringing winds of more than 130mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Authorities ordered the elderly and vulnerable to evacuate the coastal city of Isumi and the city of Yokohama (pictured), south of Tokyo, and advised that all residents should be prepared to leave.

More than 1,000 households have lost power, according to electricity company TEPCO.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have cancelled a total of around 500 flights in and out of Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports.

Japan’s bullet train has suspended several services and is warning of severe delays on trains between Tokyo and Osaka and on other lines.
