British tourists travelling to Portofino this summer could be slapped with a hefty €275 fine after the Italian village’s Mayor introduced measures to stop overcrowding.
Any visitors caught loitering and taking selfies in two newly-created ‘red zones’ in the Italian Riviera beauty spot may be issued with a financial penalty, said Mayor Matteo Viacava.
The measures are aimed at stopping the buildup of tour groups and passengers waiting to return to their cruise ships, he added.
The no-loitering rule will hopefully bring an end to the ‘anarchic chaos’, said the Mayor, who pointed out that excessive crowding might stop emergency services travelling through the village.
Portofino (pictured) in the Italian Riviera has a population of just 369 residents.
The red zones are active until 6pm every day and will remain in place until 15 October, The Times reports.
“The objective is not to make the place more exclusive, but to allow everyone to enjoy our beauty,” added the Mayor.
“We want to avoid dangerous situations caused by overcrowding. Portofino isn’t anyone’s property, it belongs to everyone. Everyone must respect it.”
Celebrity Cruises, Ponant, Oceania Cruises, SeaDream Yacht Club, Seabourn, Royal Caribbean International, Star Clippers, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Windstar Cruises all have ships calling at Portofino this summer.
