A Delta Air Lines pilot who caused a UK-New York flight to be cancelled because he was allegedly over the legal alcohol limit for flying safely, has appeared in court.

Lawrence Russell Jr, 62, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday afternoon.

He was arrested at Edinburgh Airport at around 10am last Friday afternoon, shortly before take-off for JFK Airport.

The flight was cancelled and Delta said affected passengers were assisted with their travel plans.

Mr Russell, of Georgia in the US, made no plea to a charge that he breached section 93 (1) of the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to reappear before the court sometime within the next eight days, the Scottish Daily Express reports.
