Prince Harry has urged the travel industry to ‘do better’ by people in tourist destinations around the world.
The Duke of Sussex made the comments during the AGM of his Travalyst organisation, which aims to encourage tourism to be more sustainable.
During a video call with delegates, Prince Harry said: “Travel and tourism relies on destinations, held together by communities, without which we have nowhere to travel to.
“Communities are the beating heart of travel and we must do better by the people who are the custodians of the places we visit,” according to The Independent.
He added: “More and more people are wanting to make informed travel choices so that the benefit of travel is felt by all.”
The duke commended ‘fantastic’ organisations such as Invisible Cities, which trains homeless people to become tour guides, and Goblal Himalayan Expedition, which has helped electrify more than 200 villages.
Non-profit organisation Travalyst, founded by Prince Harry in 2019, has formed a coalition of brands including Booking.com, Skyscanner, Tripadvisor, Trip.com, Visa, Google and Expedia Group.
It has recently launched an initiative to check that tourism certification bodies that focus on sustainability meet a set of criteria to be displayed on Travelyst’s partner platforms.
