Research by Post Office Travel Money in partnership with TUI has revealed that holidaying in Ibiza will cost a family twice as much as Sunny Beach in Bulgaria.

Back in March, the Post Office Holiday Money Report declared the Algarve to be the best value short-haul destination for holidays this summer, but it’s latest report says the Black Sea resort will be the most affordable for families.

That’s because the its Family Holiday Report report looks at slightly different commodities, and, according to a spokesperson ‘the Algarve doesn’t tend to offer things like children’s meals in restaurants’.

Post Office Travel Money and TUI looked at the cost of 10 items in 16 European holiday destinations, including lunch and dinner, snacks, drinks, suncream and insect repellent, to work out where families will get the best value for money.

They found that in Sunny Beach, the items would cost just over £110 compared to £117 in the Turkish resort of Marmaris, the next cheapest, and £229 in Ibiza, the most expensive.

Marmaris was the cheapest resort last year, according to the Post Office, but it said it was pushed into second place this year following the collapse of its economy, which has led to 100% inflation. Fortunately for Brits, the value of the Turkish lira has also dropped, which means the price increase has been contained to around 17%.

Families will find that Sunny Beach is also more expensive than last year – with prices up about 10% – but it will be cheaper than elsewhere.

Algarve remains the best value of 14 eurozone destinations surveyed, although prices have risen more than 18%, according to the Post Office Travel Money. The basket of goods cost £124 its main resort, Albufeira, 84% cheaper than in Ibiza.

Prices have risen in 75% of resorts, but they have fallen in three popular Spanish destinations, the Costa del Sol (-0.7%), Lanzarote (-7.2%) and Majorca (-1.2%), and also in Crete (-0.2%), it said.

However, specialist tour operator Kirker Holidays said it has seen typcial prices rises of around 10% from its Spanish suppliers. Speaking to Travel Gossip at AITO’s Summer Soiree, Director Ted Wake said: “This has meant we have seen people looking more at Portugal, because it offers better value.”

Post Office Head of Travel Laura Plunkett said: “Even though sterling is stronger now than last July, price inflation across Europe means that families need to allow for increases in meals, drinks and other tourist costs in their spending budget. Doing some holiday homework before leaving home could help to reduce the chances of busting the budget while abroad.”

Consumer research for the Family Holiday Report found that 73% of families bust their holiday spending budget by 55% last year, splashing out an average of £300 more than they’d intended.

Phillip Iveson, Commercial Director at TUI UK & Ireland said: Our all-inclusive offerings continue to be in high demand, as customers appreciate the convenience of having everything covered and knowing exactly what they can spend on meals, activities, and other items when they’re in destination.

“Self-catering options continue to remain popular as well, reflecting a budget-conscious approach by British travellers who are opting for different holiday options that work for their personal circumstances.”
