Riviera Travel has added a new seven-night Douro itinerary to meet travel agent demand for sailings on the river.
The river cruise and escorted touring operator has chartered MS Porto Mirante from Scylla Cruises to operate 10 departures on the Douro river between July and October 2024.
Prices for the new round-trip Highlights of the Douro Valley and Salamanca cruise from Porto start from £2,049 per person.
The fare includes flights, transfers, onboard meals, drinks package, tea, coffee and wi-fi.
All 10 sailings are now available to book.
Riviera currently offers a seven-night Douro, Porto and Salamanca cruise which is operated by Douro Elegance and Douro Splendour. Prices start from £1,699.
Riviera Travel’s UK and Ireland Head of Trade Tom Morgan said Douro bookings represented 41% of all Riviera’s river cruise bookings in the second quarter of this year.
Tom said: “We’re adding capacity because the current Douro itinerary is so popular. Our current Douro itinerary has been the best-selling river cruise itinerary with the trade for the last three months.”
He said agents who sell Riviera’s Douro sailings will earn £750 in commission on average.
“Everything is put together for you so it’s a good opportunity for agents to earn some good money,” he added.
Since the launch of Riviera’s new door-to-door service on 3 July, which offers customers a £150 saving on the cost, 2023 river cruise sales have risen by 28%.
Tom added that all river cruise bookings for departures across 2023 and 2024 have gone up by 36% since the door-to-door discount offer started.
Return door-to-door transfers from Eastbourne and Gatwick would normally cost £160, but customers living in the Sussex town will pay £10 if they book before August.
Meanwhile, Riviera has added three city extensions for passengers on The Blue Danube cruise, The Douro, Porto and Salamanca sailing and the Springtime river itinerary.
The extensions are in Vienna, Porto and Amsterdam. All extensions comprise of a three-night hotel stay, the services of a Tour Manager and a programme of tours and visits.
Prices start from £549pp.
