Ryanair has reported that it was removed from some of the larger online travel agencies last month, including Booking.com, Kiwi and Kayak.
Despite this and more than 900 flight cancellations due to the Israel/Gaza conflicts, the airline saw a 9% increase in passenger traffic for December.
Passenger numbers hit 12.54m, while load factors sat at 91%. For the year, Ryanair’s traffic was up 13% from 160.4m passengers in 2022 to 181.8m in 2023.
Addressing the OTA removal, a statement said: “This welcome removal may be the result of pressure from consumer protection agencies or a response to the recent Irish High Court ruling, which granted Ryanair a permanent injunction against screenscraper Flightbox from unlawfully scraping Ryanair.com content for OTA’s, or in response to Ryanair’s KYP (Know Your Passenger) customer initiatives such as verification.”
Ryanair added that the sudden removal will ‘reduce short term load factors by 1% or 2%’ in December and January and also soften short term yields, but said it didn’t expect it to affect overall 2024 traffic.
Meanwhile Wizz Air also released its latest statistics for December today. The airline saw passenger numbers for December 2023 increase by 18.8% compared to December 2022, hitting 4.96m. For the year as a whole, Wizz Air flew 60.3m passengers – an increase of 32% on the previous year.
Wizz Air continued to grow its network last year, and its Abu Dhabi arm doubled the number of flights to 15,000 – carrying more than three million passengers.
