Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O’Leary is calling for airports to serve passengers a maximum of two drinks to tackle the rise in unruly behaviour on flights.

He said violent outbursts on planes are a weekly outburst, which he blamed on a combination of drink and drugs.

The outspoken airline boss told the Daily Telegraph: “We don’t want to begrudge people having a drink, but we don’t allow people to drink-drive, yet we keep putting them up in aircraft at 33,000 feet.”

It was difficult for airline staff to identify drunk passengers at the gate, he said, especially when they board in a group. “As long as they can stand up and shuffle they will get through. Then when the plane takes off, we see the misbehaviour,” he added.

In 2015, Ryanair started removing duty-free alcohol bought at airports from passengers boarding flights to Ibiza. This summer, passenger also flying to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma, and Tenerife are banned from taking duty-free drinks into the cabin.

The booze must be placed in a cabin bag, provided by the passenger, to be stowed in the hold. This will be free of charge only for passengers who have bought priority boarding or have a small piece of hand luggage. If passengers are unable to provide a suitable bag, the alcohol will be thrown away.

Ryanair said cabin bags are searched at the gate and anyone hiding booze could be stopped from boarding.
