Security has been tightened at UK airports and ports as part of a nationwide manhunt for a terror suspect who escaped from Wandsworth prison on Wednesday morning.

The hunt for Daniel Abed Khalife has reportedly caused longer queues at security checkpoints at several UK airports as more thorough checks of departing passengers are carried out.

Tannoy announcements at Glasgow Airport warned passengers of delays due to a ‘national incident’.

In an alert on its website, Heathrow says: “Due to additional checks required, waiting times for departing passengers may be longer than usual. Passengers are advised to arrive no earlier than usually recommended and to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.”

The public has been urged not to approach ex-soldier Khalife, aged 21, who was about to go on trial for terrorism and Official Secrets Act offences.

He is believed to have escaped from Wandsworth Prison in southwest London by sneaking away from the kitchen, where he was working, and clinging to the bottom of a delivery van.

The terror suspect, who is slim and about 6ft 2ins with short brown hair, was last seen wearing the prison chef’s uniform of a white T-shirt, red and white check trousers and brown steel toe cap boots.

The Metropolitan Police said: “An alert was issued by the Counter Terrorism Command in relation to Khalife through established operational briefing channels to relevant UK police and law enforcement agencies, including those at UK ports and borders.”

The Home Office said wait times at airports were made temporarily lengthier but that had now been ‘resolved’.

The Port of Dover warned of delays because of a ‘police matter’.
