Luxury in California is about unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, such as floating silently over the Napa Valley vineyards at sunrise, performing sunset yoga on the beach, mooching through LA’s Art District or one-on-one gym session with trainer-to-the-stars Kirk Myers at the now legendary DogPound.

Nothing is off the agenda for those with a sense of adventure and a desire to do something a little out of the ordinary.

Starting in Los Angeles, visitors are encouraged to spend a few days exploring the unique delights of the different neighbourhoods, enjoying the street murals in Downtown, painting (with wine, not oils) on the beach, taking a private tour of a football stadium or a private shopping experience in Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive.

They can even book a tasting with a Michelin-starred chef, there are no limits to the California dream.

Each LA neighbourhood has a choice of luxury lifestyle hotels, including the funky new Hotel Per La, once the marble-fronted Bank of Italy, and the Venice V, described as ‘the only beachfront lifestyle hotel’ in Venice.

“UK visitors are now spending 1.5 days longer in Los Angeles than before the pandemic and they are spending more time in each district,” said Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board President & CEO Adam Burke.

Two hours’ north of LA, Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera. Lying between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, it gained a reputation in the 20th century for wellness holidays long before ‘wellness’ became the new travel buzzword. Modern-day visitors enjoy sunset cruises on private yachts, kayaking in the harbour, learning to surf, or cycling along the beautiful coastal road.

“Everyone is into experiences right now and we offer so many wonderful things for people to do,” said Visit Santa Barbara President & CEO Kathy Janega-Dykes.

Visitors can also go hiking around the cliff-top Lookout Park, pet animals in a boutique zoo or explore the five Channel Islands that lie just off the mainland.

In the evening, Santa Barbara’s amphitheatre is a great place to see some top US bands in a more intimate venue than the big international stadia, but with its Spanish colonial-style red roofed houses, smothered in bougainvillea, its downtown art galleries and beautiful public gardens, the city is also a great place just to chill.

Top-end hotels in Santa Barbara include Rosewood Miramar Beach and The Ritz Carlton Bacara, and there are also numerous boutique, independent properties.

Head further north to Napa Valley, one of the world’s top wine-producing regions, and unique experiences include an early morning balloon-ride over the vineyards. Flights operate daily, weather permitting.

Alternatively, visitors can travel the length of the valley on a restored historic train, on which they’ll enjoy an elevated dining experience. The more active can arrive by ferry from San Francisco, hire a bike and ride along a 47-mile trail, which passes more than 100 wineries. E-bikes are also available.

“Some 60% of our lodgings are classified as luxury,” said Visit Napa Valley President & CEO Linsey Gallagher.

This includes a new Four Seasons at the north end and Auberge Resorts Collection Stanly Ranch at the southern end, so there is no shortage of places to stay for your high-end clients in California.
