Catania airport in Sicily has reopened after smoke and ash erupting from Mount Etna forced it to close.

More than 50 flights were disrupted on Sunday and airspace closed after the volcano began to erupt, tipping black ash onto runways and vehicles.

Operations resumed at 9am local time, but travellers were warned to expect delays.

In a statement on Monday morning, the airport said: “Starting from 9am, the airport will be operational again and flight operations will be restored with initial limitations. There may therefore be delays on the scheduled times.”

An easyJet flight from Gatwick, due to arrive at 10:50 local time has been delayed by an hour, while a BA Euroflyer service, also from Gatwick, is delayed for over an hour, until 12:30 local time.
