Sir Richard Branson and Transport Secretary Mark Harper will be on the first transatlantic flight to be powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) when it takes off from Heathrow at 11.30 this morning.

Flight100, on board a Boeing 787, branded Virgin100, will be powered with 50 tonnes of SAF, with 88% derived from waste fats and the rest from the wastes of corn production in the US.

No paying passengers will be on board.

The flight was given the go-ahead by the Civil Aviation Authority earlier this month and has also obtained special approval from the Irish, Canadian and US aviation authorities.

Sir Richard “I couldn’t be prouder to be onboard Flight100 today alongside the teams at Virgin Atlantic and our partners, which have been working together to set the flight path for the decarbonisation of long-haul aviation.”
