Travellers to Saint Lucia are being warned that it is likely to be hit a near-hurricane-force storm later today or this evening.

Storm Bret is packing winds of up to 70mph and is currently just off the coast of Barbados.

It is likely to roar across the eastern Caribbean islands this afternoon, bringing high winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf.

St Lucia Prime Minister Philip Pierre told residents in a social media post: “Protect your lives, property and livelihoods.”

Mr Pierre also called for people to remain calm as the island braces itself for the first biggest storm of the season.

The Foreign Office (FCDO) said the islands’ two airports closed at 10.30am local time (3.30pm BST) until further notice.Businesses and government offices will close at 1pm. Schools have closed all day.

The British High Commission in Castries will be closed to the public but is reachable by telephone.

The FCDO said local updates and instructions will be announced on TV and radio up to and after the passing of the storm, and on social media: Saint Lucia Government and Office of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia.

“You should monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Centre and follow the advice of local authorities, including any evacuation orders, and advice from your tour operator / airline,” added the FCDO.

British Airways’ next flights to and from Saint Lucia are on Sunday.
