Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to lash Caribbean islands with heavy rain and high winds throughout this week.

Storm warnings have been issued for multiple islands including St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The National Hurricane Center said Ernesto was moving rapidly toward the northern Leeward Islands, where it is expected to deliver strong winds and heavy rains today, before heading towards Puerto Rico this evening.

Four to six inches of rain are predicted to fall over parts of the Leeward and Virgin Islands, while Puerto is bracing for a maximum of 10 inches in some areas.

Heavy rainfall might cause flash flooding and mudslides in the Leeward and Virgin Islands on Wednesday and in Puerto Rico from Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center has warned.

The UK Foreign Office has issued storm warnings for Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis, advising British visitors to monitor weather updates and follow local advice.

Cruise lines have moved some ships away from the eastern Caribbean to avoid the storm.

Ernesto is the fifth named storm of the 2024 hurricane season, forming just days after Hurricane Debby hit Florida.

Last week, the Foreign Office warned British travellers to be prepared for ‘an above-normal’ Atlantic hurricane season.
