Barrhead Travel says Sundays have been as busy as Saturdays for the retailer during the current peak booking period.

President Jacqueline Dobson said its branches and calls centres have been ‘non-stop’ since 2 January, adding: “Even Sundays, which are traditionally quieter for retail in some locations, have been just as busy as Saturdays.”

Barrhead said last Saturday was its highest-ever sales day with bookings up 20% up over the previous weekend, and the following day was its best-ever Sunday.

Cruises have been particularly popular, it added, with departures from Barbados and Southampton among the top five holidays booked.

While summer 2024 is the most sought-after season, almost 20% of Barrhead’s bookings last week were for travel before the end of March.

“We thought 2023 was the year of the holiday – but booking patterns are suggesting that there may be more frequent trips and longer holidays booked for the coming 12 months,” added Jacqueline.

“At this halfway point in the month, I think it’s safe to say that it will be an exceptional January. Customers are telling us that their holidays are non-negotiable for this year and are turning to agents to guarantee the best value-for-money.”

Barrhead Travel’s top destinations so far for January are Tenerife, Majorca, Barbados, Lanzarote and cruising from Southampton.

Meanwhile, Gold Medal beat its record for bookings through the web on Tuesday 16 January.

Earlier this week, Hays Travel, Advantage Travel Partnerships and Travel Counsellors also confirmed record trading over the past weekend, while Youtravel said Monday 15 January was its best trading day.
