Customers, fellow travel agents and citizens have been posting messages of support for Hays Travel after one of its shops was attacked during riots in Sunderland.

Bricks were thrown through the window of the Vine Place store on Saturday night, when disorder broke out across the city centre.

A car was overturned and set on fire and anti-immigration protestors pelted police officer with stones and beer cans. So far, at least 12 people have been arrested.

The riots in Sunderland followed similar scenes in other cities, which were sparked by the murders of three little girls during a dance class in Southport last week.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Helen Hays, daughter of Hays Travel owner and Chair Irene Hays wrote: “Two young lads decided to throw 2 bricks through Hays Travel Sunderland today. Why? Seriously why?

“We’re a Sunderland based business who do huge amounts for the local community, dedicate nearly £1m a year to charities across the UK, we’re taking on more than 500 apprentices. Why?”

She added: “Nothing comes from hate but more hate. Violence helps absolutely no one. Go home.”

In response, many others posted their support for Hays on X, with one potential customer stating that they had planned to book a cruise with a rival business but would now book with Hays instead.

Another X user wrote: “It’s truly disappointing to see such senseless actions against a business that does so much good for the community. Hays Travel Sunderland, you’re a beacon of support and generosity. Keep up the amazing work.”

No Hays staff were injured, but Helen said they were ‘a little shaken’. She added that ‘everyone is being looked after’.

Chief Operating Officer Jonathon Woodall-Johnston said the damage would be repaired and the shop would be open today. He added: “Our thanks go to Northumbria Police, who were at the scene quickly and have been visible and supportive.”

The damage to the Vine Place store followed an unconnected break-in at Hays Travel’s head office in Sunderland last month, in which computer equipment, including more than 20 mobile phones, was stolen. A man was later arrested by police in connection with the crime.
