As we approach the end of 2024, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the year gone by. For travel, it’s been a really strong 12 months, as members took millions of people away on their dream holidays. ABTA has been pleased to support you with this.

When looking back it’s often the more challenging moments that stand out - and we’ve had a few this year, from heat waves to hurricanes, and travel disruption caused by IT problems. ABTA has been at your side throughout, whether that’s offering legal guidance on your obligations, providing operational updates on the emerging events or offering clarity and reassurance via the national media.

Quite rightly, sustainability has been front of mind for many members and destinations. We’ve seen the impact of climate change in destination, as well as increasing concerns about overtourism. Sustainability is a huge focus for us; we work closely with members and governments at home and overseas to look at the breadth of issues and how we can all play our part. Our work has included offering the latest knowledge and insights, such as the free biodiversity workshops we ran over the past couple of months.

This year also saw a new UK Government. There have been positive noises so far that the Government understands and values our industry, with the Aviation Minister sharing this sentiment at our recent Travel Matters event. We have been working hard to engage with the new Government and the raft of new MPs who joined Parliament in the summer. There has already been some progress on some of our policy asks, including on decarbonisation and Business Rates reform, and we’ll continue to pursue these issues in 2025.

We’ve welcomed new members this year, and some re-joiners too, who recognise, among many things, the value of the ABTA brand in giving peace of mind when booking a holiday. Members are also increasingly making the most of the range of options we have to help you meet your financial protection obligations, and enjoying the increased choice we now offer.

With 2025 on the horizon we look ahead to what’s next. For ABTA we’ll be celebrating our 75th year - a landmark moment. We’ll be kicking off the year with marketing and PR activity to coincide with peaks. It aims to encourage people to book holiday with an ABTA member, and help people travel with confidence.

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, I hope you have a chance to relax with family and friends over the coming days, before we start what we hope will be another prosperous year for travel.
