Thailand’s Prime Minister has confirmed the country is no longer planning to introduce a tourism tax, which would have cost Brits about £7.50 each.

Sretta Thavisin announced the plan for the long-delayed tax had been dropped during a visit to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.

The tax, which was originally due to be introduced a year ago, was to have funded tourism developments and assist foreigners involved in accidents.

However, the Thai Government said in a message on its website that it hoped scrapping the proposed tax would encourage higher tourist spending.

Earlier this month, Thailand doubled the time British holidaymakers can remain in the country visa-free from 30 to 60 days.
