Thailand has introduced a new five-year visa aimed at digital nomads, while also extending visa-free travel for British tourists to a maximum of 60 days, up from 30 previously.

There is also an option for British visitors to extend their visa-free stay for a further 30 days.

Tourism of Thailand UK Director Sadudee Sangnil said: “The UK and Ireland have always been visa exempt but we are excited to see the validity extend to 60 days with the option of 90 days.

“Thailand is such a diverse country with so much to explore and the option to stay for up to three months provides an opportunity for visitors to travel at a more leisurely pace and see and experience more.

“We continue to promote hidden gem cities and Thailand’s ‘soft powers’ as well as educating agents on what is new so they can inspire their customers to explore new regions, cities and resorts.

“The over 50’s traveller continues to be the strongest market and this new visa option is ideal for retirees looking to travel for longer, particularly over the winter months where they can stay in Thailand where it is warm and offers excellent value for money.

“This is a great sales opportunity for agents, to sell longer trips filled with more experiences and tours.”

The new Destination Thailand Visa for digital nomads and freelancers, as well as those taking part in activities such as Muay Thai is valid for five years and allows multiple entries for cumulative stays of up to 180 days, which can be extended for another 180 days.

Spouses and dependent children are covered by the visa, which costs 10,000 Baht (about £220).

Applicants must have proof of funds or a guarantee of not less than 500,000 Baht (about £11,000) for the duration of their stay.

“Remote working and freelance lifestyle is increasing, but so is the cost of living in the UK. Thailand offers a warm, welcoming and affordable place to live and work. With the DTV visa being valid for the holder’s spouse and children too, it opens up the opportunity for family travel bookings,” added Sadudee.

“The family market in particular will be seeking the peace of mind, security and destination expertise that booking with an agent brings for long haul and long stay travel.”
