Thousands of people joined protests against mass tourism in Majorca and Menorca on Saturday.

A Spanish National police spokesperson said around 10,000 people took part in the protest in Majorca, while a few hundred marched in Menorca, while an anti-tourist march also took place in Barcelona.

In Ibiza, around 1,000 took part in an anti-tourism demo on Friday.

Carme Reines, from a collective which organised the protest in Palma, told Sky News: “We want the authorities to stop people who have not lived here more than five years from buying properties and to put more controls on holiday accommodation.”

Javier Carbonell, a real estate agent in Majorca, added: “We want less mass tourism and more sustainable tourism.”

More protests are planned, with demonstrations scheduled in the Balearics on 21 July and a protest planned for 16 June to ‘reclaim’ the Calo des Moro cove, in Majorca, which locals say is ‘full of Instagrammers who go just to take their picture’, the Sun reports.
