The Foreign Office is warning that another typhoon is likely to cause ‘significant disruption’ in Japan.
Typhoon Shanshan could affect travel the across Okinawa, Kyushu, Shikoku and Kansai regions from 27 August to 2 September, it said.
Earlier today, the storm was 70kms southwest of Yakushima Island, moving slowly north off the country’s southwest coast, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.
It comes less than two weeks after Typhoon Ampil caused major travel disruption across Japan.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued emergency warnings for storms and high waves in Kagoshima Prefecture, excluding the Amami region, as the typhoon threatens flooding and landslides.
Japan Airlines has cancelled numerous flights today, including from Osaka Kansai Airport. All Nippon Airways warned its flights at Osaka are also likely to be affected.
Japan’s high-speed rail network, the Shinkansen, has warned of cancellations on Wednesday and Thursday.
