The Travel Academy Marketing Manager Clare Sacco is spearheading a new charity to help young adults diagnosed with incurable or terminal cancer.

Clare launched Embers after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and subsequently with treatable but incurable stage four cancer in 2023, at the age of 29.

She identified a gap in both the support, resources and networks available for young adults aged 18-40, as well as a lack of awareness around early onset cancers in people so young.

Embers will host its inaugural fundraising event with a luxury auction and raffle, which is being supported by numerous travel companies including Ritz-Carlton, Hays Travel, Uniworld River Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Azamara Cruises, Explora Journeys and Silversea Cruises.

Aiming to raise a ‘significant’ amount of money for the charity, they have donated an array of prizes including a seven-night cruise with flights from Uniworld River Cruises, a luxury cruise from Azamara Cruises to a selection of worldwide destinations, a £500 voucher from Hays Travel, and a three-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton Abama, Tenerife.

The event takes place on 10 September at The Village Hotel in Elstree.

“Whilst many incredible charities exist to help children and teens, as well as older people diagnosed with cancer, I found there was very little to support young adults facing an incurable or terminal prognosis,” said Clare.

“Embers was born to provide the help that I was searching for in one place, to help remove additional pressure at what is already an incredibly distressing time.

“The Embers charity event in September marks the first step on our journey to helping young people like me, not only through support and guidance provided through fundraising and grants, but also to dispel the myth that being diagnosed at a ‘young age’ still means after turning 40.

“The reality is that more young people are being diagnosed than ever before so it’s time to change the narrative and encourage those in their 20s and 30s to get symptoms checked, to enable earlier diagnosis and better outcomes for young adults.”

Uniworld UK MD Chris Townson said” “We’re delighted to support the first Embers fundraising event, to help young people with incurable or terminal cancer.

“Despite her incredibly difficult diagnosis, Clare has identified such an important need for young people facing similar circumstances, and the funds raised both via this event and the charity in the future will go a long way to providing the type of support that she lacked, at arguably the most challenging time that anyone will ever face.”

All proceeds from September’s event will go to Embers, with its first project to create a resource for young adults diagnosed with incurable or terminal cancer, in partnership with Trekstok, a charity supporting people in their 20s and 30s living with cancer.

It will be distributed in hospitals, as well as online, so that all young people facing an incurable prognosis will be able to access help and information when they are ready.

Clare added, “I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from colleagues and businesses across the travel industry and cannot thank them enough for their kindness.

“This event could not happen without the donations I have received from cruise lines, hotels and travel agencies, as well as the constant encouragement and backing from Jane and Stuart Goldsmith, and Jane Morgan at The Travel Academy who have worked tirelessly, and supported me at every step to turn this event into a reality.”

The Travel Academy is a Manchester-based travel agency specialising in cruises.
