Travel Village Group has launched a training and development academy programme for agents who are either new to a sector or looking to enhance their skills.

The first to launch is a river cruise academy, with training, support, fam trips and marketing for homeworkers who are members of its Holiday Village franchise programme.

Members will pay a ‘nominal’ fee to join the academy, said Travel Village, which also plans to launch other academy programmes for expedition, luxury and ocean cruising.

Travel Village Business Development Manager Amanda Taylor and Group Commercial Manager Richard Cross came up with the idea whilst attending the CLIA Riverview Conference in Amsterdam earlier this year.

“Richard and I were walking back from the event, chatting through how we could get more of our business owners selling river cruises,” said Amanda. “It’s lucrative, a great alternative to coach touring, but above all still relatively new to the UK market and therefore not a product that is widely understood.”

The Academy will run for six months from September 2024 to May 2025 with a variety of face-to-face and virtual meetings for business owners to help them fully understand the river cruise product, brand, itineraries and systems training.

There will be the opportunity for those who sign up to experience two fam trips during the six months.

The agents will also host a local event, with the support of Travel Village Group and a river cruise operator before graduating in March 2025 at the CLIA Riverview Conference.

“This is a unique proposition in the industry. Aside from the individual cruise lines’ in-house training programmes, there is no immersive academy programme available,” said Richard.

“Our academy will lead business owners through a journey, enabling them to confidently introduce clients to river cruising, make bookings and be more confident when getting a river cruise enquiry.”

The programme is being supported by AMA Waterways, APT & APT Travelmarvel, Emerald & Scenic Cruises and Uniworld.
